VALERIE LEON (3:00)
i really shouldn’t oughta
but i think i kinda gotta
since the second that i saw ya
i’ve been weakenin’ in the knees
there’s a reason for my misery
but my baby’s off and busy
and we probably shouldn’t oughta
come-a-walkin’ by the wata
just to talk and get ta know ya
for the sake ta make ya fa-la-la-la-love me
but it’s been stayin’ dark past dawn

is he goin’ outta town
or will he always be around
if we were ever to be found
he’d be-a-comin’ afta me
and my baby’s got my dough
and she’ll let everybody know
and so we probably shouldn’t oughta
‘cause i think they mighta saw ya
and they’re gonna tell your fatha
that we’re plannin’ to fall-off-a
let me tell you pretty mama
i just really wanna make ya fa-la-la-la-la-la love me
but it’s been stayin’ dark past dawn

valerie leon
tell me what’s your favourite song
‘cause i haven’t heard a sound since you been around
valerie leon

we’ve been movin’ mighty slow
since we let everybody know
that we were gonna make a go
of you and me, my little pet
but the thrill we knew is gone
and everybody played along
and they’re so happy for us dear
and we’re the couple of tha year
i gotta get me outta here
i wish i neva got ta know ya
and i wish that i could show ya
just how much i really loath ya
how i curse the day i made ya fa-la-la-la-la-la love me
but it’s been stayin’ dark past dawn

I HAD TO HIDE YOUR POEM IN A SONG (3:32)
from the shades of the bow came a navy of sounds
hammering ear drums and singing your grace
the moon sunk the man-eating serpent sun down
all is hid on a pale ancient face

you are the tide never touching the shore
receded of earth as day’s birth be it long
beneath you the mountains and piles of whales
and i had to hide your poem in a song

coward
my mask is my trade
coward
on the back of your beauty i sing like a slave

in the magic magnetic new nurture of night
your bosom should hold me for fear of my breath
reflecting for fools in the mirror of might
the impossible lights in your body of death

buried in valleys are hundreds of men
who navi’d your body in weather and wrong
and i ride their graves with no thoughts of them then
and i had to hide your poem in a song

TOULOUSE (3:40)
toulouse
you’ve got me smilin’
and i’m-a-shinin’ up my two tone shoes
‘cause i never had nothin’ i was low down busted
now i’ve sure got a lot toulouse

toulouse
i ain’t denyin’
that i’ve been cryin’ but it ain’t the blues
‘cause i never had somethin’ that was ever worth nothin’
now i’ve sure got a lot toulouse

woo woo woo (woo woo woo)
I’m-a-talkin’ ta you (oh i love you too)
and i’m-a-gonna grab you tight and never hold you too loose

HUNGER IS A DREAM YOU DIE IN (3:26)
keeping on the lighter side
of getting up and bleeding life
hunger is a dream you die in
needing it with all your heart
no way to slow or stop the start
hunger is a dream you die in
something in you is not the same
and there’s no one to share your pain

hunger is a dream you die in
and dreams wake when you’re done deciding
shining faces or heavy pains
eternal spirit or roaring flames
it’s all the same
no matter where you’ve been
hunger is a dream you die in

i’ve been hungry all my life
and nothing feeds my appetite
hunger is a dream you die in
when the best of it comes true
there’s always more i need from you
hunger is a dream you die in
one last time i make my rounds
to find out what i’m still without

there ain’t no harm in being free
except for what it does to me
hunger is a dream you die in
come on let me shake your hand
and leave me standing as i am
the kind of man that understands
that hunger is a dream you die in

ONE HUNDRED REGRETS AVENUE (5:36)
no one seemed to blush even in the numbing cold
she said i’ve never felt a love from anyone i’ve known
and her ghost she always moves around the things you can’t get through
the bluish barricades all broke in two
at one hundred regrets avenue

the lights out in the street they hang too high to even shine
as she scours for the pockets that she lost out on the line
and the only wish to ever wish that ever could come true
is to find a place to hide your face into
at one hundred regrets avenue

when i found her she was living on the thirty-second floor
i had just gone up to dry my sweat on her side of the door
and i asked her “when the sun falls is there anything to do?”
she said “there’s quite a viciousness in you”
at one hundred regrets avenue

the only safety with me was a key to every lock
i heard someone inside her never get the chance to talk
she said something often but it never sounded true
the truth’s no use when no one could believe you

a glint of sudden wonder saw me down inside her eyes
she kissed me and her fragrance truly took me by surprise
then swallowed from our fantasy she tamed into a shrew
her madness on my lips like heavy glue
at one hundred regrets avenue

maybe lady some night soon
i’ll find you again ‘neath a horrible moon
one more kiss
a memory to live on you and me
love is but a virus from the best girl on the street

I’M ALONE NOW (5:26)
time and love and a whippoorwill
one passing one gone and one lonesome still
the bare naked rain of a silverless cloud
i’m alone now

everyone’s talking about your new friend
with that old mayan smile and the elephant pen
and legs like ry peters standing over the crowd
i’m alone now

but, baby i’ve got a melody
and a few things to say about you and me
and an old heavy heart that ain’t ready to leave
it’s here but i don’t know how
to be alone now

coffee at dawn and a big mess of eggs
running the morning hours down to the dregs
drunk with fidelity and reading old vows
i’m alone now

peace in the valley and mules in the grass
feet at the threshold and brains in the past
hands at my ears for that mockingbird sound
i’m alone now

SORROW (FOR LEONARD AND WILLIAM) (3:31)
i‘ve been waiting here for her to form my sentence
and i haven’t said a word of anger here
i didn’t see her running till it hit me
she’s been living right behind me all these years

i never found an ending to my suffering
she opened every door i should have closed
with the mercy of a hundred hungry animals
sorrow she shows dressed in ribbons and bows

(sorrow my baby) i know what i know
(sorrow my baby) i know what i know
can’t we fall apart together tonight

i studied every wrinkle on the pillow at my head
and sucked the sunken breath from deep within
she carved into the body of my memory and said
“let not your sorrows die though i am dead”

i’m living with her now inside the temple
she moves enough to let my patience grow
and then i hear the ringing in the tower
sorrow she shows, dressed in ribbons and bows

(GONE IS) ALL BUT A QUARRY OF STONE (4:36)
no masters no more in the world we implore
the state of our age shall be thrown to the shore
if not for the colours that glow ‘neath the sun
no beauty for anyone

no detail or time on the throw-away line
now brawn is the victor the loser the mind
if not for the ruins of what was once done
no beauty for anyone

gone is the ink in the well
gone is the words for to tell
gone is the hunger that gnaws at the bone
gone is the tale of our years
gone is the blood and the tears
gone is all but a quarry of stone

no rest ever earned creativity turned
of the nature from which it incessantly churned
if not for a morning that surely will come
no beauty for anyone

no desire ever had for all those who are sad
no praise for the ones who are perfectly mad
if not for the words in the minds of the gone
no beauty for anyone

MAYBE REMEMBER ME (4:07)
if i should dare to walk beside a memory
what would i care if anyone should find me
while you’re away with a lover you call lonely
i could stay a holy man

but if away i go begin
to send my ashes to the wind
or call my name as i rescind
maybe remember me
as silence lends itself to life
so might you and i
maybe remember me
if only i should see the light
i’ll point into the sky

another time i’d pray upon your body
and let it sink to every wound inside me
an orange bird comes resting on my shoulder
if i speak a word she’d fly away and i’d grow older

but if away i go begin
to send my ashes to the wind
or call my name as i rescind
if away i’ll always be
then take the endless part of me
and find a place and set it free

DEAD MEDIUM (3:55)
power the gears that grind on the skull
there’s room for us baby in the double bottom hull
where the black ocean sings of a throbbing old wreck
and an old folding flower we’ve come to neglect

dead medium
did you ever hear a sound so blue
dead medium
no, you never could hear it could you
when it’s gone it’s gone but it’s only a song
and baby what could that serve us in the lazy days to come
dead medium

material eyes on a powerful scale
can’t weigh out the measures together by nails
there’s too many hundreds of years in the dark
and we burden the deaf now to speak to our hearts

pass it down secretly over the years
erode it’s engravings with dead ancient tears
and move not your hips for we simply can’t use it
there’s no need to dance if there isn’t a music

joining the grave site of poems and chance
they’re building a tombstone of plastic and sweat-pants
that surely will last as the darkest years pass
and we build a new future convenient and crass
