Sixthman let him take over the Bliss Lounge where he set up a temporary recording studio between the lanes of the bowling alley. The Flatlanders (Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Butch Hancock) initial incarnation had lasted less than a year. They only played a handful of gigs, maybe 15 or so, mostly in somebody’s living room. The One Knite was an Austin, Texas bar that catered to the down-and-out and had just recently started hosting bands who played for tips. The owner, Gary Oliver, was an amateur recording buff and, for his own enjoyment, recorded many of the bands that played in his club. On the night of this performance, only fifteen or twenty people were in the audience (a good crowd for the ’72 Flatlanders). This set was typical of The Flatlanders at the time – loose, spirited and soulful. Some Hank, some Townes, a couple of Butch’s songs, a couple by Al Strehli. Jimmie did more of the lead singing in those days, Joe sang a few. For reasons no one recalls, Butch didn’t take a lead on this particular night. What Joe thinks is unique about this set is that it exists at all. We think the song list and the harmonies are extraordinary. We’ll wager you too will find some things that pleasantly surprise you. The tunes are all over the place and so is the band, offering max energy on such disparate entries as the bluegrass rave-up “Sis Draper” and the talking blues memoir of “Texas 1947.” Earle’s raw vocal on the sweet, sad “That Old Time Feeling” is heartbreaking, sounding close enough to the grave as to be doing a duet with his late friend and mentor.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYou can hear little hints of where Earle came from. The stark “Randall Knife” has the line “a better blade that was ever made was probably forged in Hell,” which wouldn’t be out of place in a Steve Earle original. In the fall of 2018, Steve and The Dukes went into House Of Blues studio in Nashville and recorded \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eGUY\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ein six days. “I wanted it to sound live...When you’ve got a catalog like Guy’s and you’re only doing sixteen tracks, you know each one is going to be strong.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEarle and his current, perhaps best-ever Dukes lineup, take on these songs with a spirit of reverent glee and invention. The tunes are all over the place and so is the band, offering max energy on such disparate entries as the bluegrass rave-up “Sis Draper” and the talking blues memoir of “Texas 1947.” Earle’s raw vocal on the sweet, sad “That Old Time Feeling” is heartbreaking, sounding close enough to the grave as to be doing a duet with his late friend and mentor.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eYou can hear little hints of where Earle came from. The stark “Randall Knife” has the line “a better blade that was ever made was probably forged in Hell,” which wouldn’t be out of place in a Steve Earle original. Also hard to beat is “The Last Gunfighter,” a sardonic western saga to which Earle offers a bravura reading of the chorus: “the smell of the black powder smoke and the stand in the street at the turn of joke.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut in the end \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan\u003eGUY\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e leads the listener back to its beginning, namely Guy Clark, which is what any good “tribute” should do. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGUY\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e is a saga of friendship, its ups and downs, what endures.
